风吹草低见牛羊 Flocks and Herbs Appear as Grass Bends to Wind
Inspired by the ancient Chinese poetry Chi Le Ge, the interactive installation echos the verse “When the winds blow, and grass bends low, the flocks and herds will show.” in the poetry and represents the grassland scenery in the old days.
Like walking through the grass, visitors to the installation can make the grass sway just by walking in front of it. What is more, the blinding grass bends down to the wind when the visitors blow the anemometer cup. Then the flocks and herds, the yard and the whole prairie would come into sight. As visitors walk around to the backstage, they would discover that the scenery is not created by digital animation, but shadows of mundane objects in our everyday life. Subtly coupling by sensors, motors and mechanical parts, the interactive installation seeks to provide a jocular and unexpected experience.
We always imitate the realistic scenes with digital media, while my work exchanges the roles of the real and the virtual in art making, creates an interactive digital animation with physical objects in the real world.
